Banning overnight positions would rule out swing trading entirely, which is a legitimate way to trade. Allowing it means being clear about where the risk sits: the firm does not absorb a weekend gap, and a position carried into a closed market is a position you cannot manage.
Trading rules
Overnight and weekendholding, permitted.
Holding overnight and over the weekend is permitted on Instant, 1 Step and 2 Step where the specific account and the underlying market allow it. Swing trading is allowed. The limitation is that a weekend gap can move equity through your drawdown level before you can act, and that breach stands.
The rule
Can I hold trades overnight and over the weekend?
Percentages are what the industry publishes. These are the same rules in dollars, worked on a $100,000 simulated account, so there is nothing left to convert.
- Overnight holding
- Permitted
Where the account and market allow.
- Weekend holding
- Permitted
Same condition.
- Swing trading
- Allowed
Subject to instrument trading hours.
- Gap risk
- Yours
A Monday gap through your floor is a breach, and a stop order does not guarantee the level.
- Drawdown floor still applies2 Step, $100,000 account
- $92,000
Equity is monitored over the weekend as it is during the week.
Plan applicability
Which programmesthis rule applies to
Our three programmes do not share one rulebook. This table is the part of the page to read before you buy.
- InstantApplies
Permitted
Against a 5% trailing floor, which leaves less room for a gap than the other two.
Why it exists
The reasoning,stated plainly
Worked example
The same rule,as a number
A $100,000 simulated account, because that is the size most people are deciding about.
Carrying a position over a weekend on a $100,000 2 Step
Friday close at $104,000, with a fixed floor at $92,000.
- Friday equity
- $104,000
$12,000 above the floor.
- Position held
- Open over the weekend
- Monday gap against you
- -$13,000
The stop does not fill at your level.
- Monday equity
- $91,000
Below $92,000.
The account is breached on the gap. Position size before the weekend is the only control over this, which is why it belongs in the plan rather than in the Monday morning support ticket.
Commonly misread
What tradersget wrong here
Every item below has cost somebody an account. They are published for that reason rather than for completeness.
“A stop-loss protects me over the weekend”
A stop is an instruction, not a guarantee of price. A gap fills past it.
“The drawdown is not checked while markets are closed”
Equity is measured when the market reopens, and the breach is recorded at that point.

Can I hold trades overnight?
Where permitted by your specific account rules and where the underlying market remains available, yes.
Can I hold trades over the weekend?
Where permitted by your specific account type, yes.
Can I swing trade?
Yes, subject to your account rules and the trading hours of the instruments you trade.
What are the GFN trading hours?
Trading hours depend on the instrument and the liquidity available for that market.
Is GFN responsible if a market closes while I have an open trade?
Traders are responsible for knowing the trading hours of the instruments they use and managing positions accordingly.

The rulesthat sit next to this one
When can I trade?
Trading hours follow the instrument and its liquidity, not a GFN schedule. Holidays move opens and closes, and the daily reset is set in the dashboard.
Does slippage excuse a breach?
Slippage, spread widening and weekend gaps are trading conditions, not exemptions. A breach caused by a fill you did not want still stands.
What is maximum drawdown?
Maximum drawdown is 5% on Instant and 8% on 1 Step and 2 Step - $5,000 or $8,000 on a $100,000 simulated account, measured on equity.
What can I trade?
Forex, indices, commodities, metals and cryptocurrency instruments are available where the market offers them, on all three programmes, at up to 1:50.
