Futures drawdown explained
End-of-day vsintraday trailing
Both trail your best balance. The difference is when they look - and on a futures account that difference decides how much room you really have.
The short version
End-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown looks at your balance once, after the close, and moves the floor up if you finished the day at a new high. Intraday trailing drawdown watches every tick and moves the floor up whenever your account - including open profit - makes a new high.
Get Funded Now's 1 Step futures accounts use end-of-day trailing. Instant accounts use intraday trailing, which is the trade-off for skipping the evaluation.
Worked example: one trade on a $50K account
Both accounts start at $50,000 with a 3% ($1,500) drawdown, so the floor starts at $48,500. You buy, the trade runs to $800 of open profit, then comes back and you close it for +$200.
| Moment | Balance / equity | EOD floor | Intraday floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start of day | $50,000 | $48,500 | $48,500 |
| Trade peaks | $50,800 | $48,500 | $49,300 |
| Trade closed | $50,200 | $48,500 | $49,300 |
| After the close | $50,200 | $48,700 | $49,300 |
Under EOD the floor only rose by the $200 you actually kept, leaving $1,500 of room. Under intraday trailing the $800 peak raised it by $800, leaving just $900 - you lost $600 of room on a winning trade.
Trading an EOD drawdown well
- Size from the floor, not the balance. Room is balance minus floor, and that number is what your stops spend.
- The floor stops nothing intraday - a breach at 10am is still a breach, even though the floor won't move until the close.
- Use the position size calculator to keep any one stop to a fraction of your room.
Questions
What is end-of-day trailing drawdown?
A drawdown floor that is recalculated once a day from your closing balance. Unrealised profit during the session does not move it.
What is intraday trailing drawdown?
A floor that follows your highest balance in real time, including open profit, and never moves down.
Which is better?
End-of-day. A trade that runs into profit and comes back costs you nothing under EOD, but permanently raises your floor under intraday trailing.
Can I breach an end-of-day drawdown during the day?
Yes. The floor is only recalculated at the close, but if your balance touches it at any moment the account is breached.
